The number of people who died from land slide at Landfill in Kiteezi Wakiso, Uganda has risen to 35 people.
Of the 35 confirmed dead, 12 of them are children according to the Police report.
The landslide happened on August 9th after a heavy rainfall which led to the collapse of a large volume of rubbish that buried homes killing people and livestock.
Death toll was first reported to be 8 including 2 children, rising to 12 by Sunday Morning on 11th August and by Friday 16th 2024, Police confirmed the death toll to be at 35 people.
The cause of the catastrophe is attributed to the use of the dumping site beyond capacity making the effluent to develop cracks that were easily moved following a heavy down power.
The incidence has caused an emergency problem with over 1,000 people being displaced while dozens were injured in the unpleasant incident.
Garbage crisis has also been reported in Kampala Capital City Authority after tones of garbage have been left on streets as the local council finds a new site to accommodate rubbish from nearly 4 Million, Kampala’s day time population.
Excavations are still ongoing on the site by the rescue teams searching for bodies still buried underground as hopes of getting any survivors are near zero.
